Pig-breeding farm Mikelani is a Jekabpils Labiba JSC part, which is a part of Pie Daugavinas group. The farm is the largest in Latvia and one of the largest among European farms of such type. Mikelani is situated on the territory of 20 hectares, where 30 000 – 33 000 pigs are kept at a time in 40 buildings, selling about 50 000 of pig fatteners annually.
TECHNOLOGY and DEVELOPMENT
After privatization of the farm in 1996 it had been reconstructed and modernized that led to significant improvement of animals’ welfare and quality and brought down production costs.
Group livestock keeping is realized by means of modern feed cook-house and liquid feeding line, microclimate and advanced technology of manure removal.
There is concrete structures production workshop at the farm, which main direction is manufacture of specialized latticed ferroconcrete slabs for manure removal systems at livestock farms. Leading Latvian specialists developed this technology. After its trial it was clear that the accordance with all respective rules and regulations was ensured. Unique form of the slabs make the ratio between total are of inlet and total area of the floor (whole slab) high. Animals feel very comfortable.

QUALITY
Mission of pig-breeding farm Mikelani – is to supply clients with a high quality, healthy pork. Many years’ experience and innovative approach allow to bring down production cost staying inside the scope of the mission.
Automatic feeding system is used at the pig farm – feed from the containers is coming into the stalls directly. Before entering the stalls the feed is isolated from rodents, birds and insects, by that means the risk of infecting the feed is excluded.
The pig-breeding buildings are equipped with modern ventilation and sewage systems. The enterprise produces specialized flooring frames from concrete, through which the manure is led away to the manure storage. That is why manure transporters are not used anymore.
Buildings of pig-breeding farm Mikelani are reconstructed in accordance to the EU standards – animals have enough space, there is an appropriate microclimate, automatic watering and feeding.
The role of manual labour at the Mikelani farm is diminishing because technological processes of pig breeding are constantly modernized.

PERSONNEL
Together with thirty years of experience in the industry pig-breeding farm’s “Mikelani” team is constantly developing their knowledge and skills through research and development and exchange of experience with pig farmers of Germany, England, Denmark and Sweden and of other countries.

ECOLOGY
Jekabpils Labiba JSC places considerable emphasis on ecology, animal welfare and their health.
Project of construction of biogas production plant has been developed at the Mikelani farm. After implementation of the project pig-breeding complex will be a wasteless production and will provide nearest villages with environment friendly electrical power and farmers with high quality fertilizers.
